When I started my resume writing service on Long Island, NY in 1993, my client base was local because my marketing plan was limited to the yellow pages and local networking. I loved those early beginnings because each year I advanced from a small in-line listing to bigger full color ads. Meeting with clients face-to-face was a great experience. It really honed my client interviewing skills and established a client based that, believe it or not, continues to this day!
Then I went online in 2001 at the recommendation of my advertising representative. That changed everything! Getting my listing on page one in Google became an obsession. I moved into the #3 spot on page one organically (meaning without paid ads) and stayed there for five years.
When I saw how many local clients were finding me online, I pulled my expensive ad and focused on my online marketing strategy. In a few short years, my client base went from local to national — and then international. What really amazed me, and still does to this day, is how many clients contact me because I am in New York. I was, and still am, able to leverage my experience working for many of New York’s top firms and major banks.
The Internet has made the world a smaller place. I just returned from a wonderful out-of-state trip and can honestly say there’s no place like New York. When I stepped out of the airport and saw the yellow taxis, heard the noise level, and observed the fast pace, I knew I was home sweet home.
